Hector Protector - Maurice Sendak

Best known for his masterpiece Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice sendak's illustrations have the look and feel of earlier nineteenth century children's illustrations, with their carefull cross hatching and light watercolour tints. First published by Harper in 1965 Hector Protector, and As I Went over the Water are based rather bizarre on nursey rhymes. I love the sea monster in As I Went over the Water, who swallows the boat whole, leaving just a flag sticking out of his mouth until regirgitating the vesel in a later frame.

This is a more recent of Sendak's books.
